Rodrygo likely to miss World Cup for Brazil with severe knee injury

Rodrygo is expected to miss Brazil's upcoming World Cup campaign after he suffered a serious knee injury during Real Madrid's surprise 1-0 home defeat to Getafe on Monday.

"Following tests carried out today on our player Rodrygo by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn lateral meniscus in his right leg," Real Madrid said in a statement Tuesday.

The injury will sideline Rodrygo for around eight months, sources told ESPN. Brazil's opening match at the World Cup is against Morocco on June 13.

The Brazilian federation wished the 25-year-old winger "a speedy recovery and that he returns to the pitch as soon as possible."

Rodrygo has scored nine goals in 37 caps for Brazil. He appeared in all five of his country's matches at the 2022 World Cup, starting once.
