Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas confirmed on Friday that Les Gones beat out competition from a host of other clubs to sign coveted Celtic striker Moussa Dembele.
Dembele, 22, has signed a five-year deal with the Ligue 1 side, completing a transfer worth €22 million (£19.7 million) hours before the close of the European transfer window.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers announced earlier on Friday that a previous offer from the French club had been rejected.
"It is vital to make clear that we have never promised any player that he can leave the club at a particular time. It has never happened," he said in a statement. "In fact, we have said all along that we did not wish to sell Moussa given the circumstances within the transfer window, and that is why we rejected a significant offer yesterday."
Sky Sports reports the rebuffed "significant offer" Rodgers speaks of was worth £18 million. Dembele had been left out of Celtic's Europa League win over Suduva on Thursday amid speculation about his future. He later posted two thinly-veiled tweets hinting at frustration, as it seemed the Scottish champions would deny him a move.
However, Lyon returned with an offer Celtic felt they could not refuse.
"This particular decision to accept this offer has been taken in order to serve the best interests of the first-team squad, my coaching team, and the culture and environment we have created in these last two seasons," Rodgers added. "The board and myself are united and they have been very supportive to me on this issue."
Dembele joined Celtic in 2016 as a 19-year-old and had an explosive impact in Scotland during his first season, scoring 32 goals in 49 games in all competitions. Though his goal return last term was less headline-worthy - he struck 16 times in 39 appearances in an injury-filled campaign - his performances were enough to ensure he remained a transfer target for teams around Europe.
At Lyon, he hopes replace last season's star Mariano Diaz, who was re-signed by Real Madrid this week when the La Liga giants exercised their buy-back option. Dembele has big boots to fill - Mariano hit 21 goals in 45 games last term.
