Manchester United won a scarcely believable seesaw contest after blowing an initial two-goal lead, Norwegian minnows Bodo/Glimt outlasted Lazio in a nervy shootout, and Tottenham and Athletic Bilbao ground out wins to reach the Europa League semifinals Thursday.
United's remarkable comeback from a 4-2 deficit at Old Trafford put them on a collision course with Athletic Bilbao, while Tottenham will face Bodo/Glimt for a chance to salvage their dismal season with silverware.
The semifinals begin May 1, with the reverse legs set for May 8 the following week.
Bodo/Glimt are the most surprising of the semifinalists. From a town of just 55,000 people, they're the first side from the Arctic Circle to ever make the final four of a major European competition.
Lazio ate at Bodo/Glimt's 2-0 first-leg advantage and leveled the tie in the 93rd minute when substitute Tijjani Noslin reacted first to a loose ball in the area. Boulaye Dia gave Lazio a 3-2 aggregate lead halfway through the first half of extra time, but it lasted just nine minutes as Andreas Helmersen's 109th-minute header resorted parity. Bodo/Glimt converted three penalties to Lazio's two and celebrated Norwegian history at the Stadio Olimpico.
United entered the final 20 minutes of the second half with a 2-0 lead but ended up taking the scenic route as Lyon forced extra time with a pair of late strikes.
Corentin Tolisso's red card for a seemingly innocuous tangling of legs did little to slow down Lyon, who built a two-goal lead themselves in extra time thanks to Rayan Cherki's thunderous strike and Alexandre Lacazette's penalty.
The Ligue 1 side had scored four unanswered goals to seemingly leave United dead and buried. But Bruno Fernandes' 114th-minute spot-kick sparked a sensational seven-minute turnaround for United. Kobbie Mainoo made it 4-4 on the night and 6-6 on aggregate with a composed finish into the bottom corner before Harry Maguire separated himself from his marker to head in a sensational winner in the 121st minute.
Tottenham put in a surprisingly solid defensive effort to shut out Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 and earn a 2-1 aggregate win. Dominic Solanke's 43rd-minute penalty was all Spurs needed to reach their first major European semifinal in six years.
Athletic Bilbao beat Rangers 2-0 to win their sixth straight Europa League home game and give life to their dream of playing the final at their home San Mames stadium. Nico Williams' 80th-minute goal built on Oihan Sancet's 45th-minute penalty to leave an overmatched Rangers side in the dust.
