Slim win over New England sends Philadelphia to MLS quarters
The Philadelphia Union were on the back foot for large portions of their match against the New England Revolution on Saturday night, but ultimately needed just one moment of inspiration from Sergio Santos to advance to the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back Tournament.
The Brazilian's slick finish in the 63rd minute was enough for the Union to eke out a 1-0 win and march into the last eight of the competition.
Jim Curtin's side will now play the winner of Sunday's contest between Sporting Kansas City and the Vancouver Whitecaps in the next round.
Goalkeeper Andre Blake was once again the Union's standout performer. The Jamaican shot-stopper, who has made more saves than any other netminder in the tournament thus far, turned aside five efforts from the Revs.
Santos took care of the rest at the other end.
Following a turnover at the halfway line by Gustavo Bou, Santos took a perfect pass in stride from Jamiro Monteiro before picking out the corner from an acute angle for the lone goal of the match.
Whether it was his frustration over the defeat or his displeasure with the officiating, New England coach Bruce Arena was livid at the final whistle, ultimately being shown a red card by referee Ismail Elfath.
