Toronto FC ousted as NYCFC reach quarterfinals of MLS tournament
New York City FC advanced to the quarterfinals of the MLS is Back Tournament with a commanding 3-1 win over Toronto FC in their last-16 clash Sunday night.
Goals from Jesus Medina, Valentin Castellanos, and Maxi Moralez toppled a TFC side that offered little going forward before getting a late consolation goal from substitute Patrick Mullins.
New York will now play the winner of Tuesday's contest between the Portland Timbers and FC Cincinnati in the next round.
Having been ousted from the MLS playoffs by the Canadian club twice in its brief history - including in last year's postseason - Sunday's assured display was a measure of revenge for New York.
From the outset, Ronny Deila's side imposed itself on proceedings at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Looking sharp, quick, and always one step ahead, New York grabbed a deserved early advantage through Medina, who found himself in plenty of space inside the penalty area before drilling a low effort beyond Quentin Westberg in the fifth minute.
Castellanos and Moralez scored second-half goals to establish a 3-0 advantage and put the result beyond doubt.
Though a tired, lethargic TFC side finally showed some signs of life in the waning minutes after the introductions of Jozy Altidore and Jonathan Osorio, the late tally from Mullins was all the club could muster before bowing out of the competition.
NYCFC, meanwhile, will return to the pitch for their quarterfinal match Aug. 1.
