Watch: Diaz records final out to send Puerto Rico into semis
In arguably one of the biggest spots of his young career, 22-year-old Edwin Diaz delivered.
The Puerto Rico closer struck out United States second baseman Josh Harrison with an 86-mph slider for the final out of a 6-5 win that clinched Puerto Rico a spot in the semifinals at the World Baseball Classic.
Diaz entered the inning with a 6-3 lead and immediately issued a five-pitch walk to Nolan Arenado. Eric Hosmer followed with a single to put two men on with no outs. Diaz then got Buster Posey and Paul Goldschmidt to strikeout.
With two outs, Brandon Crawford tripled to make it 6-5. Crawford appeared to be out while sliding into third, but umpire Edgar Estivision ruled him safe. Diaz would strike out Harrison to end the threat, however, and the game.
