Edwin Diaz suffers knee injury celebrating Puerto Rico's win
Star reliever Edwin Diaz suffered a right knee injury Wednesday while celebrating with his teammates moments after he saved Puerto Rico's win over the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic.
The injury appeared to occur when Puerto Rican players mobbed Diaz on the infield.
Teammates carried Diaz off the field before he went down the tunnel in a wheelchair. His brother, Alexis, also a pitcher for Puerto Rico, was in tears on the field.
Diaz was examined by an orthopedist on site and also underwent X-rays. The New York Mets said he'll undergo additional testing Thursday but had no further update on his condition.
"It sucks," Puerto Rico manager Yadier Molina told reporters, according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. "When you see a guy who works so hard like Edwin, when you see him on the ground like that, it's sad."
Outfielder Enrique Hernandez said the Puerto Rican clubhouse was "quiet" after Wednesday's win over the rival Dominicans.
"It definitely doesn't feel like we just beat the Dominican Republic to advance," Hernandez said, according to Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald.
The 28-year-old tallied four strikeouts and one save in two appearances for Puerto Rico this week. He struck out the side in the ninth inning Wednesday to eliminate the Dominican Republic and send Puerto Rico to the WBC quarterfinals.
Diaz, a two-time Reliever of the Year winner, enjoyed a dominant 2022 campaign with the Mets and re-signed with the club on a five-year, $102-million contract during the offseason.
