Ionescu bids farewell to Oregon after abrupt end to collegiate career
Women's college basketball star Sabrina Ionescu took some time Monday to reflect on the unexpected circumstances that led to the abrupt conclusion of her senior season with the Oregon Ducks.
"This year has been the toughest year of my life, and I wasn’t expecting to have to end my senior year like this. Very saddened but wholeheartedly understand," Ionescu wrote in an Instagram post.
"To my teammates, coaches, fans, and the University of Oregon, thank you for providing me with the best four years of my life," Ionescu continued. "Although our unfinished business will remain just that, I have been blessed to be a part of this journey. Thank you for all the memories, that I will forever hold close to my heart."
After winning the Pac-12 Tournament, Ionescu and the Ducks (31-2) were set to compete for a national championship until the NCAA canceled the men's and women's basketball tournaments on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The 5-foot-11 guard averaged team-highs in points (17.5) and assists (9.1) while also adding 8.6 rebounds in 33.7 minutes per game this season.
Ionescu is expected to be the first pick in the 2020 WNBA Draft on April 17.
