Andre Gomes returns to Barcelona after suffering leg injury
Andre Gomes left Portugal's camp ahead of the European champion's first World Cup qualifier after suffering bruising on his right leg, his club Barcelona announced Sunday.
The Blaugrana will assess the injury over the next week and then set a timetable for his recovery.
The 23-year-old joined Barcelona from Valencia in a €35-million deal, though he has only played 109 minutes of competitive football for the La Liga winner thus far.
He will now miss Tuesday's qualifying match against Switzerland, with manager Fernando Santo calling up Porto midfielder Andre Andre as a replacement.
"Andre Gomes has returned to Barcelona from international duty with Portugal due to injury. The medical examination undertaken this morning by the club's doctors has confirmed the player has a muscular contusion on his right leg," read a Barcelona statement.
"In the next week, it will be determined when he can return to the squad."
Gomes is the second Barcelona player to return early from international duty, as Lionel Messi was forced to withdraw from the Argentina squad with a groin issue.
Messi reversed his decision to retire from the Albiceleste and scored the winner in Thursday's qualifier against Uruguay, but said afterwards he aggravated a pre-existing injury in the process.
