Canada's Schaefer to miss remainder of world juniors
Defenseman Matthew Schaefer will miss the remainder of the World Junior Championship, Team Canada announced Saturday.
Schaefer collided with the net at full speed and subsequently crashed into the boards during the first period of Friday's shocking 3-2 shootout loss to Latvia. He was unable to return to the contest.
Schaefer suffered a broken clavicle and will require surgery, sources told The Athletic's Corey Pronman.
The 17-year-old scored one goal in 20:26 minutes of ice time during Canada's tournament-opening 4-0 victory over Finland on Thursday.
Vancouver Canucks prospect and 2023 third-round pick Sawyer Mynio is expected to draw into the lineup in Schaefer's absence, according to TSN's Mark Masters.
Schaefer recorded seven goals and 22 points in 17 outings for the OHL's Erie Otters before heading to Ottawa for the world juniors. He's considered a top prospect for the 2025 NHL Draft and has a chance to go first overall.
Blue-liner Zayne Parekh, the ninth overall pick in the 2024 draft, was a final cut from Canada's roster prior to the tournament. Carter Yakemchuk, who went seventh overall last summer, was left off the selection camp roster entirely.
