Hurdler Lolo Jones withdraws from trials, won't compete in Rio
Popular and polarizing 100-meter hurdler Lolo Jones has withdrawn from the Olympic track-and-field trials, saying she didn't have enough time to heal from hip surgery in November.
The 33-year-old Jones posted a heartfelt video Wednesday on Instagram in which she said she wasn't retiring and simply giving her hip more time to heal.
''I may have not shown you over the course of my career how to win an Olympic gold medal, but I hope my journey has shown you how to get back up when you get knocked down, how to try again when you feel like you've already tried so many times,'' Jones said.
She's one of the most marketable and high-profile athletes in track. But she's drawn her fair share of detractors for cashing in off the track without winning a major outdoor championship on it. The 100-meter hurdles was the only event Jones was attempting to make for the U.S. Olympic team, so she will not be competing in Rio.
Jones made the U.S. bobsled squad for the 2014 Sochi Games and is one of 10 Americans to take part as an athlete in both the Winter and Summer Olympics. She had not competed in a race since February.
''I don't know what my future holds, and I'm sure a lot of you want to know if I'm going back to bobsled,'' she said. ''Know this, I'm a fighter. I want to finish this race strong, whatever that race is.''
