Alien invasion or 'fire erection': Twitter pokes fun at Olympic cauldron
Outside of the dazzling lighting and dancing displays featured at the PyeongChang 2018 opening ceremony, social media users couldn't help but point out various extraterrestrial and phallic undertones of the Olympic torch and cauldron.
During an otherwise flawless opening ceremony that concluded with South and North Korean hockey players ascending a massive staircase to meet the final torch bearer, Kim Yu-Na, the torch and cauldron will be remembered on social media for reasons that organizers likely didn't foresee.
Here's how the torch and cauldron were interpreted among the many creative minds on Twitter:
The most popular comparison for the cauldron was to an alien spacecraft. Whether it was "War of the Worlds" or "The Incredibles," there was something ominous about the design:

Perhaps, the cauldron can serve a purpose after the games?
The Olympic torch design looks like a medical device used to retrieve a marble from a kid's ear canal. https://t.co/mA8hHigOXn

Even the torch had an otherworldly look to it:

Others thought the torch used to light the cauldron looked a bit phallic:

Then there's this thing:

Meanwhile, one person came up with a genius way to light the cauldron at Tokyo 2020:
