Italy leads total medal table after 1st weekend of Milan Cortina Games
The host nation is off to a strong start at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
Italy enjoyed its best-ever single day at the Winter Games on Sunday, grabbing six medals to increase its overall tally to nine - more than any other country thus far - after the opening weekend of competition.
Italy is already almost halfway to matching its all-time best Winter Games performance, which came at Lillehammer 1994, when the country left with 20 medals.
Norway leads the gold medal count in Milan Cortina, with cross-country skiing icon Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo among the Norwegians to stand on the top of the podium.
Total medal standings
After being kept off the podium on Day 1, the United States got on the board in a big way Sunday, claiming two gold medals.
Ilia Malinin, known as the "Quad God," delivered a spectacular performance to lift the U.S. to its second consecutive Olympic title in team figure skating. Earlier in the day, American Breezy Johnson won gold in the women's downhill event.
Canada, meanwhile, has one bronze medal to its name, courtesy of speedskater Valerie Maltais.
