Canada's Dubois wins gold in 500m short track speedskating

Canadian speedskater Steven Dubois captured gold in the men's 500m short track race Wednesday.

The 28-year-old got off the line quickly and held off multiple Dutch skaters in the frenetic four-and-a-half lap race to win his first individual Olympic title.

Dubois now has five career Olympic medals, including a bronze from the same event during the 2022 Games.

He helped the Canadian mixed relay team claim silver on Day 4 in Milan, but had otherwise struggled in the individual disciplines - the 1,000m and 1,500m events - before Wednesday's exciting triumph.

Fellow Canadian William Dandjinou, considered the gold-medal favorite in the 500m race going into the Winter Games, had a scrappy final and finished off the podium. He was also penalized after the race.

Brothers Melle van 't Wout and Jens van 't Wout took home silver and bronze, respectively, for the Netherlands. The latter was seeking his third gold medal in Italy after winning each of his two previous individual events.
