Why the women's snowboard cross winner wears a mustache

The Czech Republic's Eva Samkova is a 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist, after winning the women's snowboard cross event on Sunday, and she pulled off the feat while wearing a drawn-on mustache.

Why? For good luck, duh. Samkova's mustache on Sunday was red, white, and blue - the colors of the Czech Republic flag.

"It's for luck," Samkova said. "Today is special, so it's a special mustache."

The mustache tradition began at the World Championships in Spain in 2011, writes Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan. "I wanted to have fun," Samkova said. And no fun can be had without a mustache, as we all know.

Samkova starred on the course at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park on Sunday. Her mustache stole the show after she won gold, writes Passan:

Her Olympic mustache starred in the aftermath of her decisive victory over Canadian Dominique Maltais (silver) and Chloe Trespeuch (bronze) of France. At the bottom of the course, Samkova removed a helmet emblazoned with wolves, chucked her board and started a celebration befitting of someone who braved the jumps and bumps of the snowboardcross course with style in both performance and facial hair.

Samkova even gets her teammates involved with her mustache game, writes NBC's OlympicTalk's Chris Estrada. Samkova's teammates help her order mustache stencils online. "It's fun," Samkova said.

So much fun.
