Sneijder given farewell match by Netherlands in September
The Dutch national team has earmarked a September friendly as a farewell match for midfielder Wesley Sneijder, who is stepping away from the international game.
The 33-year-old is currently playing for Al-Gharafa in Qatar after a forgettable spell with Nice, and used his move to the Gulf State to announce his retirement from international football in March, thereby clearing the way for younger players to have opportunities in Ronald Koeman's Netherlands setup.
Sneijder's final match will be against Peru on Sept. 6 at the Johan Cruyff ArenA in Amsterdam.
Sneijder has scored 31 goals across 133 caps for his country, and was a prominent member of the squads that finished second at the 2010 World Cup and third in the 2014 edition. At club level, he clinched the Champions League with Jose Mourinho's Inter, and also enjoyed success with Ajax, Real Madrid, and Galatasaray.
"When I left, I knew, of course, the influence that this move to Qatar could have on my career as an international," Sneijder said when he retired from Netherlands duty last month.
"In addition, I understand that Koeman wants to make a new beginning with other, younger players. We were very open and that was a very pleasant conversation. I respect his choice."
