Brazil rules out Dani Alves for World Cup due to knee injury
Dani Alves' faint hopes of making it to the World Cup this summer have evaporated.
The Brazilian right-back, who suffered a season-ending knee injury with Paris Saint-Germain in Tuesday's Coupe de France final against Les Herbiers, has been officially ruled out by Brazil for the tournament in Russia.
"Medical exams have concluded the impossibility of calling up Daniel Alves for the World Cup," the Brazilian national team's statement reads. "We hope that the athlete has a quick recovery and he can bring his technique, courage, and leadership to the Amarelinha as soon as possible."
Following Alves' injury in the final - which PSG won 2-0 to secure its 12th Coupe de France - early tests showed the 35-year-old suffered a separation of the anterior cruciate ligament with a posterolateral sprain, which would necessitate at least three weeks of recovery but still gave Alves a small chance of playing in the World Cup.
Brazilian national team manager Tite is expected to name his 23-man squad for the summer tournament on Monday.
