After not taking a shot in the entire second half of Friday's match in St. Petersburg, Iran found the net through the head of Moroccan Aziz Bouhaddouz, as the substitute directed the ball beyond his own goalkeeper in the 95th minute for the only goal of the game.
The win is just Iran's second in World Cup history.
Despite dictating the contest and crafting a far superior collection of chances, Hakim Ziyech and Co. couldn't make their advantage count. Now Morocco - fancied by some to push both Spain and Portugal to come out of Group B - faces likely insurmountable odds to advance, having to play the pair of powerhouses in its next two matches.
Iran's last-minute win, meanwhile, signals the first time an Asian side has recorded a World Cup triumph since 2010.
