Twitter lets loose on Ronaldo for blowing penalty
Even Cristiano Ronaldo isn't a guarantee from 12 yards out.
Portugal's superstar was awarded a second-half penalty against Iran on Monday after a video review, but rather than put his team up 2-0, Ronaldo was emphatically stopped by goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
As you'd come to expect by now, Ronaldo was hammered online for the botched spot-kick, while some commended Beiranvand for his save.
Ronaldo misses a penalty. He’s no Harry Kane is he? 😉

The Iran coach actually tossed away his jacket and left the field after Ronaldo was given the penalty kick. He went to the locker room and later was told about the miss and he returned to the sidelines.

And, of course, some couldn't resist the inevitable Lionel Messi comparisons after the Argentina star had his own penalty stopped against Iceland.

Ronaldo has now missed the same number of World Cup penalties as Lionel Messi and Diana Ross. #IRNPOR

I know I tweeted the other day that people shouldn't laugh at Messi and now I'm pumping my fists aggressively as I celebrate Cristiano Ronaldo's pain.
