Davies 'ready to start' Canada's World Cup opener vs. Belgium

Breathe, Canada fans.

Alphonso Davies allayed fears about his availability ahead of Canada's opening World Cup match, saying he's fit and "ready to start" against Belgium on Wednesday.

"Definitely, I think I can start the first game," he told TSN's James Duthie.

"They wouldn't put me on the pitch if it was 50-50. I think they 100% knew that I'll be able to recover well and be able to play this tournament."

Canada was on edge after Davies suffered a hamstring injury with Bayern Munich just two weeks before the country's first World Cup campaign in over 35 years.

However, Bayern Munich announced that the injury wasn't as serious as initially thought and wouldn't jeopardize his availability for the World Cup.

"When I picked up the injury, at first, it was devastating," Davies said.

He added, "Luckily, it wasn't too bad of an injury. We're still in recovery; we're still trying to heal. And, yeah, it's going well. I'm just happy to be here and happy to represent my country."

Meanwhile, Stephen Eustaquio and Milan Borjan were able to train Sunday after picking up minor injuries before Canada's first game.

After Belgium, Canada will face Croatia and Morocco in Group F.
