By the numbers: Getting to know the Italian national team

Reuters

Let's take a look at the four-time World Cup champions, by the numbers.

0 - World Cup matches all five of the team's recognized strikers have been a part of heading into Saturday's contest against England. Mario Balotelli, Ciro Immobile, Lorenzo Insigne, Alessio Cerci and, most surprisingly, Antonio Cassano have never competed in football's showpiece event before.

1 - Only one team participating in this year's World Cup has a 23-man squad that does not feature anybody who plays their club football in England. That, as you have probably figured out by now, is Italy.

2 - Squad members that were not born in Italy. Thiago Motta is Brazilian by birth, while Gabriel Paletta called Argentina home before switching allegiances.

3 - The number of players who play their club football with French champions Paris Saint-Germain (Salvatore Sirigu, Thiago Motta, Marco Verratti).

4 - Members of the team that helped the Azzurri capture the 2006 World Cup (Gianluigi Buffon, Andrea Barzagli, Daniele De Rossi, Andrea Pirlo).

5 - This will be Buffon's fifth World Cup. He has been in the squad for each edition of the tournament dating back to 1998.

6 - Serie A champions Juventus have provided the squad with more players than any other team. Buffon, Barzagli, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, Pirlo and Claudio Marchisio all ply their trade with the Bianconeri.

12 - The number of goals Italy scored when they last won the World Cup in 2006. Coincidentally, they racked up a dozen tallies in 1934 and 1982, when they also happened to win the tournament. Magic number?

27 - The average age of the squad.

68 - Combined total of international goals scored by every member of the squad. De Rossi leads the way with 15.

140 - Buffon leads the team with 140 caps to his name.
