Match-by-match predictions: Group B

Reuters

The memory of Paul the psychic octopus — the only true animal incarnation of Nostradamus whose predictions were ever to be trusted — lives on through our prediction of each and every match at this summer’s World Cup.

In the latest instalment, we take a look at a group that will feature arguably the most intriguing match of the round.

Group B

Spain, Netherlands, Chile, Australia

Two of the most talented attacking squads in the world, one team operating quietly under the radar looking to upset conventional wisdom, and a final side that has been bemoaning their terrible luck since December's draw.

Spain vs. Netherlands - June 13, 3:00 PM EST (Arena Fonte Nova)

A rematch of the 2010 World Cup final, this is arguably the pick of the litter when it comes to the opening round matches.

Free from the strain that goes along with a championship final, expect this contest to be more open than the one that took place in Johannesburg four years ago. That, combined with the fact that the Dutch will never be mistaken as one of the tournament’s best defensive teams, should make this an exciting contest.

If Xabi Alonso looks a little bit slower than usual, it'll be because of the metal chest plate he'll be wearing to protect himself from Nigel de Jong. No worries though, his infallible range of passing will not be impacted.

Prediction: Spain 2, Netherlands 1

Chile vs. Australia - June 13, 6:00 PM EST (Arena Pantanal)

Chile have hopes of fulfilling their promise as one of the surprise packages of the tournament - which, for the record, is a way better phrase than the grossly overused 'dark horse.'

That campaign starts with a must-win match against the Aussies. And win, they will, using a goal from Alexis Sanchez to collect a vital three points.

Prediction: Chile 1, Australia 0

Australia vs. Netherlands - June 18, 12:00 PM EST (Estadio Beira-Rio)

Tim Cahill's best chance to give Australian fans something, anything, to cheer about at the tournament. The veteran striker may be able to find the net against an untested Dutch defense, but ultimately, the Socceroos will simply be outclassed.

Who will be tasked with stopping Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben? Glad you asked. That would likely be the duo of Mark Milligan and Matthew Spiranovic.

Yup, take the over.

Prediction: Netherlands 3, Australia 1

Spain vs. Chile - June 18, 3:00 PM EST (Maracana)

On paper, this should be an enthralling attacking contest. While Spain's collection of attacking talent is more explosive than a Michael Bay film, Chile boast their own group of players, led by Alexis Sanchez, that are more than capable of lighting up your television.

A recipe for a run-and-gun, high scoring affair, then? Not quite.

In truth, these two sides are built on a solid foundation, with La Furia Roja keeping the ball and pressing high when they lose it to limit their opponents' chances, while Chile are adept at soaking up pressure and hitting quickly on the counter attack - often initiating their assault down the flanks.

It's an interesting clash of styles, but one that will probably cater to the tactical aficionado more than it will to those who prefer open play and constant action at both ends of the field.

Prediction: Spain 1, Chile 0

Australia vs. Spain - June 23, 12:00 PM EST (Arena da Baixada)

Assured of advancing to the knockout stage as group winners will afford the defending champions the chance to take their foot off the gas pedal ever so slightly.

Australia, meanwhile, have nothing to play for.

It won't be a great match, but a touch of class from any one of Spain's obscenely talented attacker will be enough to secure the victory. Australia, pushing hard in the late stages to salvage a point, will concede a second late in the contest.

Prediction: Spain 2, Australia 0

Netherlands vs. Chile - June 23, 12:00 PM EST (Arena Corinthians)

The most important match that will take place in this group.

Spain should have enough to assume top spot, leaving these two teams to battle it out for the second berth into the knockout stages. With Kevin Strootman in the lineup, the Dutch would be favorites. Alas, he is watching the tournament from his couch, while Arturo Vidal is likely to play in the contest after overcoming recent knee surgery.

Matches are won and lost in the midfield.

Prediction: Chile 1, Netherlands 0
