The Human Octopus: South Korea's World Cup prophet

South Korean football commentator Lee Young-pyo is turning into quite the celebrity after the pundit's incredible ability to predict Spain's downfall and World Cup results, including exact scores of games, have gained worldwide recognition.

In May, according to the Wall Street Journal, the former South Korean footballer correctly predicted that Spain would struggle in Brazil, saying “This World Cup will provide soccer fans with a chance to see the downfall of the Spanish team.”

It was a bold prediction that came to fruition following Spain's elimination after a 2-0 loss to Chile, but it's his accurate forecast of World Cup results that have led many to compare him to Paul the Octopus, the psychic cephalopod whose correct predictions during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa led to fame.

Lee correctly predicted the winners, and scores - both finished 2-1 - for the Italy-England and Ivory Coast-Japan matches and prophetically said Lee Keun-ho's inclusion during South Korea's match against Russia during a live broadcast would help inspire the Koreans minutes before Lee Keun-ho scored the game's opening goal.

Lee offered a "safe" prediction for South Korea's next match against Algeria, saying that if they're able to perform similarly to their match against Russia, they should come away with three points.

Lee, however, put an end to speculation about his psychic abilities in a Twitter post:

“I just say what I think and I don’t have any special foresight ability or insight. Prediction is just prediction. Just enjoy the World Cup!”
