Throughout the tournament, we'll begin each day with our World Cup Daily Brief, bringing you all the highlights from the previous day's matches and news cycle, while also looking forward to what you can expect from the day ahead.

Greece moved on to the last 16 with a 2-1 win over the Ivory Coast after a last-minute controversial penalty. England and Costa Rica played to a draw, and Colombia easily beat Japan, but they were into the next round already. Yes, it was a fairly standard World Cup day. Nothing to see here ...

Oh fine, let's get to what you came here for. You want to know about the alleged bite.

Italy 0, Luis Suarez's teeth 1

OK, well, first off, Italy lost this game. Just to get that out of the way because no one is really paying attention to the actual result.

Late in the second half, Italy's Giorgio Chiellini was essentially minding his own business, until he collided with Suarez. It appeared to be innocent at first, but then Chiellini pulled down his shirt - and there looked to be bite marks on his shoulder. The replays also appeared to show Suarez go in for the chomp. However, the referee didn't see what happened, even though Suarez was rolling around on the pitch clutching his teeth. FIFA is now investigating.

For his part, Suarez said that he didn't do anything wrong, and that it was part of the game.

"These situations happen on the field. I had contact with his shoulder, nothing more. Things like that happen all the time," he told Uruguayan television, via the Daily Mirror.

Yes, they do happen when Suarez is around, at least. This is his third (alleged) biting incident.

This person made good on their bet that Luis Suarez would bite someone at the World Cup
They are definitely a time traveller.

Coming up

Bosnia-Herzegovina is already on the outs, but they could make life hard for an Iran squad that came close to drawing Argentina. Group E is looking messy: Basically, win and you're in. For others, like Honduras, you need to win by a lot to be in. France basically has the top spot on lock, unless they have a gigantic meltdown.

What everyone is talking about today

The Uruguayan FA has until 5 p.m. (Brasilia time) to put together evidence in response to FIFA's disciplinary charges against Suarez. One Spanish report says part of their defence will be to claim that the photos are Photoshopped, but many of the bite-mark images circulating on social media are from wire services like Reuters.
