Ask any non-soccer fan about their hesitancy to adopt the world's most popular sport as their own, and they're likely to point to the diving, time-wasting and faking injuries.
There are several reasons why players feign injury or exaggerate fouls, and as you become more involved as a football fan, the act becomes less offensive. However, it never stops being annoying.
To help settle the argument over which nation is the worst offender, the Wall Street Journal studied footage of the first 32 matches in the World Cup, and ranked every squad according to the number of injuries they suffered, and their total time writhing on the pitch.
While you should definitely click this link to see the full listing, we'll offer you some of the highlights:
- Most injuries: Brazil (17);
- Most time spent writhing: Honduras (7:40);
- Most honorable side: Bosnia-Herzegovina (only two injuries, and 0:24 time spent writing); and
- Biggest surprise: Netherlands (only four injuries, and 1:39 spent writhing).
