Muguruza's coach calls hostile French Open crowd 'pathetic'
Garbine Muguruza was met with a contentious crowd on Court Suzanne Lenglen on Sunday, as she battled local favorite Kristina Mladenovic in the fourth round of the French Open.
On top of their boisterous support of Mladenovic, the crowd was ruthless in its attempts to rattle Muguruza, jeering her and celebrating her mistakes as Mladenovic won a three-set tussle.
After the match, Muguruza walked off the court wagging her finger reproachfully at the crowd, and later on in the post-match press conference broke down crying when asked about Mladenovic's efforts to rile the fans up throughout the match. Muguruza's coach Sam Sumyk, who is French, also weighed in.
Congrats to k. Mladenovic.@GarbiMuguruza very proud of you.Never simple to be defending champion. To the French crowd, pathetic, no class!!

Muguruza, who won the tournament last year, also said in the post-match presser that she didn't blame the crowd for cheering on the hometown player, but wishes the fans could have gone about it differently.
"I understand, I just think they sometimes should be a little bit more respectful," she said. "I'm not here to create enemies, I mean, I love playing here.
"It's not a good feeling."
