Siniakova earns 1st singles grass-court title in Bad Homburg
BAD HOMBURG, Germany (AP) — Top-ranked doubles player Katerina Siniakova won her first grass-court singles title by beating Lucia Bronzetti 6-2, 7-6 (5) in a rain-affected final at the Bad Homburg Open on Saturday.
Siniakova served for the match at 5-3 in the second set but the Czech player double-faulted twice as Bronzetti broke back. The Italian then saved three match points before Siniakova closed out the win for her fourth career singles title.
The start of the match was delayed by rain and play was also suspended by another shower after the first set.
Going into the tournament, Siniakova had not won a singles match since the Miami Open in March, where she sustained a wrist injury that sidelined her until the French Open.
Bronzetti received a walkover to the final after top-ranked Iga Swiatek withdrew before their semifinal on Friday with an illness.
