Jessica Pegula, daughter of Bills/Sabres owner, wins Round 1 match at US Open
With Terry Pegula looking to restore a winning culture in the city of Buffalo, he might need to try and emulate his daughter.
Playing in her first ever main draw of a Grand Slam, Jessica Pegula upset 2015 French Open quarterfinalist Alison Van Uytvanck in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in her first round match Monday.
An incredible accomplishment for the 21-year-old who is currently ranked 260th in the world, who failed to make it through qualifying at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier in the year.
She will advance to face Dominika Cibulkova, who pulled off an upset of her own on opening day, beating No. 7 Ana Ivanovic in three sets. Their section of the draw is wide open with No. 3 Maria Sharapova withdrawing from the tournament Sunday due to a right leg injury.
Meanwhile, Terry can hope winning is contagious for his Sabres and Bills as they approach their regular seasons. The two teams have combined for one playoff appearance since 2008.
