Marta becomes top scorer in World Cup history with 17th goal
Step aside, Miroslav Klose.
Brazilian icon Marta became the top scorer in World Cup history when she netted her 17th tournament goal with a penalty against Italy on Tuesday. The strike was as crucial as it was historic; it was the lone goal in a 1-0 win that helped Brazil secure a place in the knockout stage of the competition.
The now-retired Klose held the benchmark since 2014 when he notched his 16th tally in Germany's infamous 7-1 semifinal victory over Brazil.
Marta's compatriot Ronaldo sits third on the all-time list with 15 World Cup goals.
Marta missed the opening match of this summer's tournament through injury but has now scored in two consecutive games heading into the round of 16.
The six-time FIFA World Player of the Year will have at least one more chance to add to her record-breaking haul.
