High school wrestler stops alleged kidnapping, assault at convenience store

A high school wrestler from New Mexico helped stop an alleged kidnapping and assault at a convenience store Wednesday by pinning the suspect to the ground.

Troy Bower told Bethany Freudenthal of the Las Cruces Sun-News his 16-year-old son, Canaan, was filling up his truck at a gas station when he noticed a commotion across the street. Canaan drove to the scene, where he witnessed a woman on the phone screaming for help and a man trying to kick down an employees-only door.

"So my son - who just won the wrestling district championship weeks ago - just came up behind this guy and bodyslammed him and got him in a choke hold and waited for the police to show up," Troy said.

The suspect, 22-year-old Daniel Arroyo Beltran, is accused of attempting to kidnap three children and of assaulting several people. He's charged with four counts of battery, two counts of assault, two counts of child abuse, and one count of kidnapping.
