Mark Henry recalls putting MJ 'in his place' after tense 1st encounter
Michael Jordan didn't make the best impression on WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry when they met for the first time at the 1996 Summer Olympics.
Henry, who was captain of the United States men's Olympic weightlifting team, spoke about the encounter during a recent appearance on SiriusXM's Fight Nation channel.
"Going to the Olympics in 1996, I was friends with Charles Barkley. I was friends with Karl Malone and David Robinson. I knew guys on the (men's basketball) team personally," Henry said. "So, I went to the hotel with Charles and as we're in the lobby, Michael walks up. It's not, 'Hey, how you doing guys? What's going on? Where we going, what we doing? Are we gonna play cards?' or nothing. It was, 'Who are you?' I said, 'Who the f--- are you?' And that was the introduction."
Henry went on to explain that it didn't matter if he knew Jordan or not, he was trying to get a point across.
"You don't walk up on Mark Henry and talk to me like I'm some kind of peon," he said. "I was somebody in the world. Maybe I didn't make the money that you made, maybe people don't know my name, I don't sell a billion dollars in shoes. But I'm Mark Henry, and if I wanted to snuff your lights out, I could do it in a heartbeat."
Barkley was able to smooth things over, which led to Jordan apologizing to Henry.
"I put him in his place and then he invited me to the All-Star Game, his birthday party," Henry said. "Went to his birthday party. We shook hands, I congratulated him, 'Hey, happy birthday.' And I never spoke to him again."
Henry placed 14th in weightlifting at the 1996 Olympics due to a back injury, while the U.S. men's basketball team won gold.
