Diana Taurasi leads Phoenix Mercury to WNBA title

Diana Taurasi added another line to her extensive resume as perhaps the best female basketball player ever on Friday, leading her Phoenix Mercury to the WNBA championship.

The 87-82 victory over the Chicago Sky marks the third WNBA championship for Taurasi and the Mercury, for whom she's played since entering the league in 2004. By dropping 24 points in the outing, she also became the league's all-time leading scorer in finals games.

Taurasi's late pull-up and-one put the Mercury ahead 84-82 with 14.3 seconds left and served as the game's defining play, earning her WNBA Finals MVP honors for the second time.

Taurasi was supported by Candice Dupree, who also dropped 24 points on just 16 field goal attempts, adding six assists for good measure. Chicago's Elena Delle Donne (23 points) and Sylvia Fowles (20 points) nearly matched the output of the Mercury duo, highlighting just how close the game was:

WNBA Final Pts FGM/3FGM/FTM Rbs TO
Phoenix 87 34/5/14 33 9
Chicago 82 32/4/14 30 10

The win gave Phoenix a 3-0 sweep of the series, completing a 7-1 playoff run after they posted the league's best regular season record at 29-5. It's hard to argue any other team deserved to be hoisting the championship trophy at the season's close.
