Report: Yankees 'may have interest' in re-signing Chase Headley

Reuters

Though Alex Rodriguez is poised to return from his season-long suspension in 2015, the New York Yankees "may have interest" in re-signing third baseman Chase Headley, according to CBS Sports's Jon Heyman.

Should the Yankees retain Headley, an impending free agent, Rodriguez would likely be consigned to full-time designated hitter duties next season. Rodriguez, however, is coming off a season-long hiatus, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed skepticism last month that the 39-year-old would be able to handle the defensive responsibilities of third base.

Headley, who isn't eligible to receive a qualifying offer, reportedly enjoyed playing in New York after being acquired from the San Diego Padres in advance of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

The 30-year-old hit .262/.371/.398 (119 OPS+) with six home runs and eight doubles through 58 games with the Yankees this season.
