WSH 4, BOS 0: Braden Holtby shines as Capitals blank Bruins

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

Alex Ovechkin scored twice in the first period and Braden Holtby made 29 saves for the shutout as the Washington Capitals blanked the Boston Bruins 4-0 Saturday at the TD Garden Arena.

Here's what you need to know...

  • Alex Ovechkin converted two of his three shot attempts in the first period, giving the Capitals a 2-0 lead in front of Holtby, who was brilliant in turning aside all 14 Bruins shots.
  • Mike Green added a second power-play goal in the second, placing a cross-ice pass from Evgeny Kuznetsov past a sliding Tuukka Rask to make it 3-0.
  • Andre Burakovsky collected his first NHL assist on Green's goal and would add his second late in the game when he found a trailing John Carlson. Burakovsky has collected three points in his first two NHL games.
  • Holtby is the first Capitals goalie to shut out the Bruins at home in 14 years. He made 29 saves for his 12th career shutout, and has allowed just one goal through two games to start the season.
