Diamondbacks' Punto plans to sit out this season

Jayne Kamin-Oncea / USA TODAY Sports

Despite agreeing to a minor-league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks last month, it appears that infielder Nick Punto won't hit the field this season.

The 37-year-old won't attend spring training with the team, telling manager Chip Hale he's shutting things down for the year, according to Jody Jackson of FOX Sports Arizona

Punto has not officially retired, Jackson notes, but said he wants to spend more time with his family.

Selected in the 21st round of the 1998 draft, Punto has appeared in 1,163 games across 14 seasons with six different teams. He played in 73 games with the Oakland Athletics last season, slashing .207/.296/.293 with a pair of home runs.
