Fantasy Spotlight: Danny Valencia

Lance Iversen-USA TODAY Sports

Throughout the month of March, theScore examines hitters who represent their team's most intriguing fantasy plays. This edition focuses on Oakland Athletics 3B Danny Valencia.

2015 in Review: 378 PA, .290/.345/.519, 59 R, 18 HR, 66 RBI, 2 SB

The Good: Valencia is part of Oakland's core going forward with the team having traded Brett Lawrie in the offseason. He's projected to hit in the middle of the order with ample opportunity to drive in runs. His career slash line of .321/.369/.493 vs. LHP assures him playing time against southpaws.

The Bad: Valencia has a career slash line of .237/.275/.389 against RHP, despite slashing .285/.325/.556 vs. righties in 2015. His .329 batting average on balls in play was well above his career average. There's a strong possibility his splits vs. RHP level out.

Best Comparison: Free agent IF Jeff Baker

What's in Store: Though he'll be given full-time at-bats to begin a season for the first time since 2011, Valencia is likely to significantly regress after a career year in 2015. Despite his success in Oakland last year, it's highly unlikely he hits .300/.382/.500 at the O.co Coliseum again this year.

Draft Outlook: Valencia doesn't have nearly enough upside to be your starting 3B or OF in mixed leagues. Leave him undrafted. He can be taken as a mid-late round pick in AL-only leagues given his middle-of-the-order status, albeit in an uninspiring Athletics lineup.
