NFL Game Summary - Miami at NY Jets

East Rutherford, NJ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Dolphins finally won a close one.

A much needed one at that.

Caleb Sturgis nailed a go-ahead 26-yard field goal with 1:57 left and the Dolphins rallied for a 16-13 win over the run-heavy New York Jets on Monday night.

Geno Smith, who had recorded just eight pass attempts heading into his final drive, was intercepted by Miami safety Reshad Jones with 39 seconds remaining to seal the outcome.

The Dolphins (7-5) are one of six 7-5 teams in the AFC, but are currently the second wild card in the conference due to the tiebreaker.

Miami had been 0-3 in games this season decided by four points or fewer, including a 39-36 defeat last Sunday when it blew an 11-point fourth quarter lead.

The Dolphins also gave up late leads to Green Bay in Week 6 and Detroit in Week 10.

Miami, however, was down by seven heading into the final frame in this one and posted just its second win in its last 50 games on the road when it trailed at any point in the fourth.

"It wasn't pretty, but we found a way to win," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said.

Lamar Miller carried the ball 13 times for 56 yards and a touchdown, while Ryan Tannehill was 25-of-35 for 235 yards with an interception for the Dolphins, who have won five of their last seven games.

Miami allowed 67 rushing yards in the second half on 20 carries after giving up 210 on 29 totes over the opening 30 minutes.

Dolphins' linebacker Jelani Jenkins was busy in rush defense, totaling 16 tackles, and his pass deflection led to the game-clinching interception.

The Jets (2-10) called 49 run plays for 277 yards and their 13 pass attempts were an NFL season low.

Eight different Jets carried the ball with Chris Johnson leading the way with 105 yards on 17 totes. Chris Ivory piled up 62 yards on 16 runs for New York, which has dropped consecutive contests.

"I feel sick, we played great for the most part," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "We can't buy a win."

Smith was 7-of-13 for 65 yards in defeat.

The Dolphins took over at the Jets' 39 early in the fourth following a defensive holding penalty on a punt and Jarvis Landry hauled in a 25-yard reception on the opening play of the drive. Miller capped the 6-play, 39-yard march with a 4-yard TD plunge to tie the game at 13-13 with 10:24 to play.

Miami outside linebacker Koa Misi burst through the middle on a 3rd-and-7 at the Dolphins' 19 to sack Smith and push a potential field-goal attempt back eight yards. Nick Folk then hooked a 45-yarder wide left.

Folk, who missed a pair of field goals, was 18-of-20 on the season on field- goal attempts coming in.

Tannehill's 17-yard strike over the middle on a 3rd-and-7 at the Jets' 31 was the key play on Miami's ensuing go-ahead field goal drive.

Jenkins then defended Jets tight end Jeff Cumberland tightly on a right seam pattern and tipped it into the air, which was brought in by Jones.

Johnson's 47-yard run preceded Greg Salas' end-around score that went for 20 yards along the left sideline to opening the scoring on the Jets' second possession.

Sturgis missed a 43-yard field goal wide left on Miami's next sequence and Folk split the uprights from 40 yards away early in the second for a 10-0 Jets spread.

Folk, though, was unable to convert a 48-yard field goal later in the frame to waste a 14-play march that took 7:09 off the clock.

Sturgis' 43-yard field goal on the final play of the first half cut the deficit to 10-3 heading into the locker room and his 44-yarder on Miami's opening touch of the second half whittled the gap to 10-6.

Folk split the sticks from 45 yards out on New York's ensuing series.
