Djokovic stunned by Medvedev in Monte Carlo quarters

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was stunned by Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.

The Serbian star fell 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to the 10th-seeded Russian on Friday after two hours and 20 minutes.

Djokovic hasn't advanced past the quarterfinals since the Australian Open in January and had been undefeated in three career meetings against Medvedev prior to Friday's clash.

"He's got a very solid backhand," Djokovic said postmatch, according to the ATP. "He doesn't make many mistakes from the backhand. He hits it very low with depth. A windy day like today, conditions are changing every single game. It's kind of tough to find the rhythm, and he doesn't give you much rhythm."

"He improved his movement a lot since last year. He definitely deserves to be where he is."

Medvedev broke Djokovic's serve five times in 10 opportunities and picked up his second straight win over a top-10 opponent.

He will face unseeded Dusan Lajovic in the next round. Both players will make their first-ever Masters 1000 semifinal appearances.
