Wolfsburg confirms Draxler move to Paris Saint-Germain
Christmas came a day early for Paris Saint-Germain after Bundesliga strugglers Wolfsburg confirmed Saturday that 23-year-old attacker Julian Draxler has agreed to a four-and-a-half year deal with the French champ.
Football's worst-kept secret has come to fruition after days of reports suggesting the German international was on the verge of a high-profile shift were substantiated by the Lower Saxons.
As per Wolfsburg's statement, financial details weren't disclosed in a deal that becomes official when the transfer window opens Jan. 1, though a €35-million fee has been agreed upon with potential add-ons of €10 million, reports ESPN FC.
"We've had some very intense but constructive discussions with Paris Saint-Germain, Julian Draxler, and his management over the past few days and we’re confident to have reached a satisfactory conclusion for all parties," Wolfsburg sporting director Olaf Rebbe said Saturday.
Wolfsburg manager Valerien Ismael added, "Of course I’m sad to see Julian go, because he’s an outstanding footballer. He gave everything in the recent matches against Frankfurt and Gladbach and once again showed how much this club meant to him."
Hardly a surprise, Draxler had distanced himself from Wolfsburg in recent months, and admitted earlier this week he was considering offers from "a couple of clubs," with Arsenal, Liverpool and Juventus reportedly monitoring the 27-time capped World Cup winner.
Already boasting a wealth of attacking options in the French capital, Draxler is likely to man a more central role at the Parc des Princes in lieu of Angel Di Maria's presence on the left wing.
Draxler will get his first chance to suit up for Unai Emery's lot after the winter break when PSG welcomes Corsicans Bastia in the French Cup on Jan. 7.
