Vernon Adams changes course, will remain with Alouettes

Quarterback Vernon Adams decided not to opt out of his contract with the Montreal Alouettes, the team announced Thursday.

"After deeply reviewing and reflecting upon my opportunities south of the border, I've come to the conclusion that my heart is in Montreal," Adams said. "We started something special in 2019, and I remain fully committed to taking this team to the next step. The best way to do so is to remain with the club, and help make us better in any way possible."

Adams said Sunday he'd leave his Alouettes contract to pursue an NFL opportunity after the CFL canceled its 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The signal-caller joined Montreal in 2018 and recently signed an extension through the 2022 season. He began 2019 as Montreal's backup but took over the starting role early into the season and led his team to a 10-8 record.

The 27-year-old racked up 3,942 yards and 24 touchdowns against 13 interceptions through 16 games. Adams also amassed 12 rushing scores and one receiving TD.

"We are satisfied with the turn of events," Alouettes general manager Danny Maciocia said. "We never doubted Vernon's commitment to our organization, our city, and our fans."
