Redblacks' Masoli out for season with Achilles tear

The Ottawa Redblacks will be without quarterback Jeremiah Masoli for the remainder of the season after the signal-caller suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, the team announced Monday.

He will undergo surgery in Ottawa soon, the team added.

Masoli made his season debut on Saturday against his former team, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, before going down in the second quarter. The pivot missed the beginning of the year rehabbing a broken leg that he sustained last summer.

The 34-year-old had completed six of 10 pass attempts for 37 yards before he went down. Hamilton eventually won the contest 21-13, picking up its first win of the season while dropping the Redblacks to 1-3.

Masoli is the second Ottawa quarterback to go down for the season after Tyrie Adams tore an ACL in his first career start in Week 4.

Dustin Crum replaced Masoli against the Ticats and appears next in line to take starting snaps for the Redblacks. Nick Arbuckle, who started Weeks 1 and 2 before being replaced by Adams, is the only other healthy quarterback on the roster.

Whoever takes snaps for the club will be tasked with getting the offense on track. Ottawa sits in third place in the East, just ahead of the Tiger-Cats, despite allowing only 18.25 points per game, the second-fewest in the league. The Redblacks' next game is Saturday against the 4-1 Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
