⚽ Hiatus Diaries: Zlatan trains, Bayern Munich take aim
With a pandemic suspending sporting events worldwide, athletes suddenly have tons of time on their hands. In the latest installment of our weekly soccer series, we look at how they've been keeping themselves entertained - and in shape - while self-isolating.
Real Betis midfielder swaps touchlines for front lines
First, let's kick off with the Hiatus Diaries' new favorite player, Ana "Willy" Romero Moreno.
Armed with a medical degree and a successful residency test, Real Betis midfielder and former Spain international Willy is spending the work stoppage helping those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 32-year-old's application to help coronavirus-ravaged Spain was swiftly processed, and with Betis' blessing, Willy is now working on the front lines as an emergency ward doctor at a Seville hospital. Instant legend.
Mourinho wishes Dele happy birthday from afar
Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho appears to have learned his lesson after he was chided for a park training session with first-team scapegoat Tanguy Ndombele amid lockdown orders.
Mourinho was more recently seen wishing a shirtless Dele Alli a happy 24th birthday from across the street. What a shame Dele didn't have Mourinho around for a game of Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
Zlatan joins another Hammarby training session
Zlatan Ibrahimovic owns a 23.5% stake in Swedish side Hammarby, and since the Scandinavian state thinks lockdowns prompted by pandemics are baloney, the 38-year-old trained with the team again Friday.
Enjoy the above video of former Vancouver Whitecaps and current Hammarby 'keeper David Ousted saying, "people enjoy having him here, he's a good guy," as Ibrahimovic lurks off-camera aiming a compound bow at Ousted's head.
Yu Hanchao sacked for license plate switcheroo
Guangzhou Evergrande have dismissed star Yu Hanchao after police found the winger guilty of illegally modifying his car's registration plate. Yu could also face a fine and a 15-day detention.
The 59-time China international was caught switching an E to an F on the plate of his Mercedes-Benz, as vehicles registered outside Guangzhou can only be used within the city for four days on the spin before having to sit for the next four.
Coman nailed for luxury auto interchange
Bayern Munich star Kingsley Coman is set for a €50,000 fine and mandatory autograph session after driving to training in his swank McLaren instead of an Audi, as per club rules.
Audi, it turns out, owns 8.33% of Bayern shares, though Coman cited a damaged wing mirror on his German-made whip as the reason for his contractual gaffe. The sanctity of Germany's noncorporate footballing ethos endures.
Bayern do 180 on traditional training
Sticking with Bayern, Coman and Co. polished their passing precision with an inflatable dartboard during Thursday's abbreviated training sessions, which featured groups of no more than seven socially distanced players.
If Hansi Flick's charges really fancy a challenge, they should have opted to play darts blindfolded. They don't know what they're missing.
Liga MX player injures thumb during FIFA tourney
Santos Laguna defender Josecarlos Van Rankin will miss the remainder of La Liga MX eSports tournament after injuring his thumb in the FIFA 20 competition, Santos confirmed, according to ESPN UK. Spare a thought for the lad.
Van Rankin's condition doesn't compare to Santiago Canizares missing the 2002 World Cup after he severed a tendon in his toe by dropping a bottle of aftershave, nor does it match when Stoke's Liam Lawrence tripped over his dog and fell down the stairs. It doesn't even top the fate that befell Queen of the South 'keeper Sam Henderson, who missed a month after being run over by a cow.
