Alderweireld scores north London derby winner as Spurs leapfrog Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur moved ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League standings Sunday after securing a 2-1 victory in the last north London derby of the season.
Though Arsenal dominated possession throughout the contest, it was Toby Alderweireld who broke the deadlock with a header in the 81st minute to secure an important win for the hosts.
Tottenham almost added to their lead shortly after, but Arsenal goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez denied Harry Kane's close-range effort.
Alexandre Lacazette gave the Gunners the advantage in the 16th minute when his thunderous shot from outside the box found the top corner, but the lead was short-lived. Tottenham drew level less than two minutes later when Heung-Min Son pounced an errant pass from Sead Kolasinac and scored with a clever chip over Martinez.
Spurs looked to be running out of steam both before and after Alderweireld's winning goal, but Jose Mourinho's men managed to hold on against an Arsenal side that created few chances in its efforts to mount a comeback.
Spurs move into eighth place with the win, while Arsenal drop to ninth with three matches remaining.
