Giants trade Sabol to Red Sox
The San Francisco Giants traded catcher Blake Sabol to the Boston Red Sox for international bonus pool space, the teams announced Wednesday.
Sabol was designated for assignment Saturday to make room for Justin Verlander on San Francisco's 40-man roster.
The 27-year-old appeared in 11 big-league games last season, slashing .313/.421/.375 with two doubles in 38 plate appearances. The California native posted a .728 OPS with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs in 97 Triple-A games for Sacramento.
Sabol got into 110 games for the Giants in 2023, slashing .235/.301/.394 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 344 plate appearances.
The Red Sox are expected to begin the 2025 campaign with Connor Wong as their starter behind the dish and Carlos Narvaez as the backup.
Boston designated right-hander Chase Shugart for assignment to make room for Sabol on its 40-man roster.
