Leyton Orient confirm positive COVID-19 tests ahead of Spurs cup tie

League Two side Leyton Orient confirmed Monday that members of the first team tested positive for COVID-19, throwing Tuesday's League Cup home clash with Tottenham Hotspur into doubt.

"Following our game on Saturday 19th September, COVID-19 testing was conducted on all of our first-team playing squad," Leyton Orient's club statement read. "Today (Monday) we received formal confirmation which shows that a number of our first-team squad have tested positive."

The London side has closed its Breyer Group Stadium and training ground until further notice. It's unclear if Tuesday's third-round fixture will be postponed or forfeited.

"We have informed the EFL and Tottenham Hotspur and will make a further announcement regarding Tuesday's match shortly," the statement added.

Unlike Premier League sides, the English Football League (EFL) no longer requires mandatory weekly coronavirus testing for staff and players. Leyton Orient conducted checks following a 2-2 draw at home to Mansfield on Saturday.

"We have also informed Mansfield Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Oldham Athletic, our three most recent opponents, prior to the public release of this information," the statement added.

A postponed fixture could create a scheduling headache for Spurs, who are set to travel to Macedonia to face Shkendija in the Europa League on Thursday.
