Amorim skewers Rashford, says he'd rather give minutes to goalkeeper coach
Ruben Amorim lambasted Marcus Rashford on Sunday, saying he would rather insert 63-year-old goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital into his lineup than the exiled forward because the latter isn't working hard enough in training.
Rashford, who hasn't played a single minute since Dec. 12 and has been left out of the squad entirely for the majority of Manchester United's matches since then, was once again not part of the team for Sunday's 1-0 win over Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Despite Amorim's other forwards struggling to find the net, the Portuguese bench boss made it abundantly clear after the match that he won't consider restoring Rashford to the squad unless the 27-year-old changes his attitude.
"It's the same, it's always the same reason," Amorim told reporters when asked why he continues to sideline the Englishman.
"The reason is the training, the way I see what footballers should do in training, in life, it's every day, every detail. So if things don't change, I will not change. It's the same situation for every player. If you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player."
Amorim added: "And you can see it today on the bench, we miss a little bit of pace to go and change the game, move some pieces. But I prefer it like that. I will put (goalkeeper coach Jorge Vital) on before I put a player on that doesn't give the maximum every day. So I will not change in that department."
Rashford said last month that he was ready for a "new challenge" after being dropped for the Manchester derby. He's been strongly linked with a move away from his childhood club during the January transfer, and Barcelona has been touted as a potential option, but no deal has materialized as of yet.
The transfer window closes Feb. 3.
Despite the impasse, Rashford took to social media to support his teammates, congratulating them on Sunday's win over Fulham.
Rashford has spent his entire professional career at Old Trafford. His production has waned over the last two years, though. He's scored seven goals across all competitions this season.
Manchester United, sitting 12th in the Premier League, have found the net just 28 times in 23 league matches in 2024-25.
