Newcastle United owner and Rangers shareholder Mike Ashley demanded a judicial review with the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to negate the appointment of Dave King to the Scottish club's board.
The case is due to be heard Feb. 4, 2016, according to BBC Sport.
King was cleared to take the chairman's role in May following a suitability review by the SFA concerning tax convictions in his native South Africa.
After consulting authorities in South Africa and Scotland, including law enforcement and the South African Revenue Service, King was given the green light to assume his position as chairman.
Ashley, who owns just under nine percent of the Glasgow side, requested the judicial review in an effort to block the appointment.
"The Scottish FA can confirm we have received a petition for Judicial Review and will be defending it," the governing body said in a statement.
Never far from controversy himself, Ashley faces opposition from the club's acting board, which at November's board meeting proposed the removal of voting rights for active shareholders involved in other professional clubs.
