Dortmund's Meunier knocks PSG's 'outrageous' party culture
Borussia Dortmund addition Thomas Meunier is bashing former employer Paris Saint-Germain for their party culture following his departure from the club.
"Nothing but birthday parties - incredible," Meunier told RTBF, according to ESPN UK. "When I was at Bruges, we'd celebrate birthdays by playing darts or pool in a bar, but here it's just outrageous.
"But that just reflects the club: hire a palace, hire a building, parties with hundreds of people. That's when you see that they're more than footballers; they're stars."
PSG boss Thomas Tuchel famously butted heads with Neymar in February when the Brazilian hosted a birthday party with teammates two days before a league match against Nantes.
"I always had a good time but it was all a bit extravagant and, 'Did you see me?' But that's part of it, part of the game," Meunier said.
The 28-year-old ended his spell at PSG by penning a four-year deal with Dortmund at the completion of his terms at the Parc des Princes, where the Belgian won Ligue 1 on three occasions.
The COVID-19 pandemic radically altered the footballing calendar, and, as such, Meunier's contract expired before PSG's participation in both domestic cup finals and the upcoming Champions League quarterfinal clash with Atalanta.
"I would have liked to have played," Meunier said. "I was with my agent in Dortmund and I was almost on my knees begging for permission to let me end the season in the Champions League with PSG."
Meunier said in July that Dortmund granted him permission to play in the French side's remaining matches, but that PSG sporting director Leonardo didn't consult the German club to work out a short-term extension.
"I simply had to pack my bags and I received a letter from the club's lawyer which said I was no longer welcome and could no longer come to training, not even in my final week," he said. "I found that unbelievable."
