On the fringes of Steve McClaren's first-team at Newcastle, attacking midfielder/winger Yoan Gouffran could be offered a lifeline by Lille during the January transfer window.
Les Dogues gaffer Frederic Antonetti spoke to the media Thursday, expressing his desire to bolster his anemic attack with the 29-year-old versatile attacker.
"He is one of the players that interests us even though he no longer plays center forward," Antonetti told reporters, courtesy of L'Equipe.
Once a traditional striker in Ligue 1, the French-born Gouffran shifted to the wing upon his arrival in the Premier League three seasons ago.
Out of favour at St. James' Park with only five league appearances, four as a substitute, the Caen youth product has become surplus to requirements in his season at Newcastle following a move from Bordeaux in the summer of 2013.
Gouffran's 2015-16 season has been a far cry from his first two with the Magpies, where the two-footed finisher appeared in 69 of the club's 78 Premier League matches, pairing eight goals with four assists.
Lille needs all the help it can get after a dismal start to its Ligue 1 campaign, as Antonetti's lot have managed only 16 goals in 20 top-flight matches to sit 13th in the table, five points shy of the drop zone.
