Report: Van Gaal missed out on Belgium gig due to 'boring' interview

You snooze, you lose.

Such are the perils of Louis van Gaal's standing as an interviewee, after the ousted Manchester United gaffer reportedly failed to secure a second interview for the Belgium job because his preliminary consultation was an exhausting affair.

Van Gaal, who was axed as United manager in May, was on the shortlist for the Belgium managerial role after Marc Wilmots was the martyr for a poor Euro 2016 showing.

Asked to describe his vision for the position, Van Gaal provided a humdrum response that was "draining and exhausting", according to the Telegraph.

Known for his protracted speeches, the Belgium federation didn't see reason to award the Dutchman with a secondary interview, eventually opting for former Everton boss Roberto Martinez on the heels of the Spaniard's deft video analysis of the Red Devils' Euro failures.

While Van Gaal's presentation reportedly failed to impress, Martinez's did the opposite, warranting the appointment ahead of the start of 2018 World Cup qualifiers.

In hindsight, the jolly Van Gaal may be pleased that he wasn't offered the job, after Martinez and assistant Thierry Henry received a baptism under fire in a 2-0 friendly defeat against Spain in Brussels on Thursday.

A talented side continued to play tedious football, and boos and whistles serenaded the players and coaches after the interval, even with star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne becoming the victim of derision.

Belgium kicks off its World Cup qualifying campaign Tuesday with a trip to Nicosia to face Cyprus.
